Slapdash genre plotting and an oddly marginalized subplot about government misinformation, but impressive effects and fantastic creature design.

Really!
Surprising. I would have thought you'd like this one a lot. It's lack of cohesive plot didn't bother me, oddly, and I really enjoyed the characters. The creature was fantastic– much better than in Cloverfield. I was kind of bummed it didn't get nominated for visual effects.

Well, monster/horror really isn't my genre, so I guess I'm more sensitive to story foibles. These characters were okay, but kind of whiny. (The little girl was fantastic.) They'd fight, lose, pass out, then sometime later they'd come to and fight some more. I was surprised so many critics loved its social commentary. I appreciate subtle shades, but this was so subtle it felt like an afterthought.
I admit, the lousy English dub didn't help matters. It's hard to get too close to characters who sound like the hyperactive kids in an old Belle and Sebastian cartoon.
