Right? I mean, obviously something like The Impostors is a better film, overall. Holds together a little better, stays on course. But people have heard of it. Compared to the reception Return to Me got, it's like they canceled school and had a parade in every town the day The Impostors came out.

It's funny; I read the thing about "most under-appreciated film of my lifetime" and thought, "I'd bet THE IMPOSTORS would have to be high on that list too... then I scrolled down to the comments.
In fact, I think we've got our next topic: the ten most under-appreciated films of our respective lifetimes. I realize Brandon's got an advantage here, since he's got far, far more years to choose from...
I'm off to start thinking about this list. I've got to determine what's going to finish a distant, distant second, third, fourth, etc. to THE LADYKILLERS.

"Yeah! Five years, baby! I do have more to choose from!"
(Smiles to himself for a long beat, feeling pretty good, then re-reads)

I think "Most Under-Appreciated Since 1980" is probably the way to go. We don't want to be combining too many eras.

I remember Brandon saying that FOUL PLAY was always on when he got home from school or something, and he watched it millions of times. I don't remember if he liked it a lot or it was just one of those movies that you see a ton when you're a kid and retain a fondness for.
Also, I've never seen it, so I have no idea if it's good. It could be dumb or awesome, for all I know. I definitely wasn't making fun of Brandon (this time); I just remember him telling me that about FOUL PLAY.

Ah. I remember him joking that it was his reason for voting "librarian" in the famous onebee "Librarian or Docent" Poll of '04. It's not that bad of a movie, but I don't really know if you could call it under-appreciated. It seems like it would've made a pretty big splash when it came out, with Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn at the top of their popularity. You'd have to ask Brandon, though. I was less than a year old at the time. (Burn!)

I liked it, but it definitely falls more into the latter category, along with Teen Wolf and Brewster's Millions, to name a few. The kind of movie that, when you stumble upon it on TV and you've got nothing much going on, you feel compelled to watch it for a little while. (And no, I wouldn't put Foul Play on the under-appreciated list.)
Are there any restrictions on this Most Under-Appreciated Since 1980 list, like "X amount of box office" or "X amount of critical praise" mean it wasn't under-appreciated?

Wow, I figured you'd be telling us stuff like that. My gut says no restrictions – you make your case for why your movie qualifies as under-appreciated, and you live or die by that argument.
E.g., I toyed with the idea of including The Incredibles on my list. Sure, it earned blockbuster numbers and universal acclaim, but it was so awesome that even that falls short of the appreciation it deserved. (I'm not going to go that way, but if you can make that sort of argument, I don't see why X amount of box office or critical praise should stand in your way.)

As for the "rules," I also would vote for No Rules. If you think that THE INCREDIBLES deserves to be on the list, go for it. I'll have FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF right there on my list to keep it company.
(also, it should be noted that Brandon's mention of TEEN WOLF reminds me of one of my all-time favorite Baron Von Funny responses of his:
