Easier to watch than Precious would have been. Scores closer to Spielberg's The Terminal on realism (and treacle) – but it's equally impossible not to embrace it, at least a little.

Now that I'm in a relationship, I'm eternally grateful for my ability to sit through absolutely any Sandra Bullock movie. (I even survived Practical Magic – on purpose!) It results in a lot less kicking and screaming when I'm occasionally forced to yield the Movie Night decision rudder. It's already paid off twice!
The saddest thing is that since our hick town doesn't have Up in the Air yet, I'd have hardly fared any better with the rudder in my own hands tonight. What a dud, 2009! What this Oscar season needed was a fun, kickass movie with Brittany Murphy in a career-defining supporting role.

Make that, sadly, a career-ending supporting role.

I admit I was angling for a bit of Heath Ledger redux. The saddest part is that I think they'll be retracting that "natural causes" part.
