The Town

2010 · 2hrs 3min · R

Another few years and we'll have an entire generation that knows Ben Affleck primarily as a director. (And an indispensable one!)

It really is fantastic. I'd put it a notch below Gone Baby Gone, but that's probably "praising with faint damnation" (copyright Joe Mulder?).

Only a notch, in the sense that Gone Baby Gone was more of a tight, plot-centered kind of construction with these character explorations tied into it (and this examination of the town thrown in as a bonus), whereas The Town is more of a character study and an examination of the town (hm), in which the story takes a bit more of a back seat, and as such there are certain story developments that seem a little more bent to fit.

However, if we are going to give Seabiscuit special mention for "Elizabeth Banks, Rest of World Being Forced to Acknowledge the Considerable Talents of" then I think The Town gets a nod for elevating Blake Lively out of the CW tween doldrums (and, for that matter, it was nice to see Jon Hamm on the big screen not having to talk to a robot Keanu – although that was only a matter of time; I mean, Mad Men has its myriad flaws, but Industry People watch it, so it's not like Jon Hamm was going to have to wait around for work).

Also, "Brandon Kruse, Actual Dragging of Ass to a Movie Theatre by" deserves some mention (or "Downloading of a Videocam Bootleg by" which is still nothing to sniff at, considering it takes the same investment of hours). Mighty nice!

I know! When you factor in the babysitter, we paid like a 200% markup just to be able to see it! And the crazy part is, this is actually the second movie we've been to in the last month, the other being The Other Guys, which I found a little disappointing. But then again, my expectations for a Ferrell/McKay joint are typically ridiculously high.

Ah, that was going to be the third prong of our triple feature if we'd manged to leave the house a little earlier. Good to know (although sadly not surprising). We may still fit it in this week, although I doubt it'll lose much if we wait for Netflix (except it'll probably be 2016 by the time we see it. Will there still be movies?)
