Indy on DVD
Do people not love Harrison Ford? I don't know; as I've stated repeatedly, I have no knack for keeping up with such things. Certainly, many of us are disappointed with his decision to appear in Hollywood Homicide this month, but hey – he needs the cash; that Calista Flockhart is an eating machine!
Who knows how much money he makes off the thing. Or why he would ever think he needs it. His reasons are his own. I'm willing to overlook the occasional career-choice transgression by the right people. (In fact, so enamored am I of Field of Dreams, Tin Cup, etc, that I've overlooked a lot and still consider Kevin Costner an okay actor.) My point is this: Harrison Ford rocks! (I get the sense I like him better than even he does, because when Sydney Pollack guest-hosted The Charlie Rose Show with Ford as his guest, Ford seemed self-deprecating to a suicidal fault. Let's just say if I were Harrison Ford, I wouldn't want to get caught alone in a dark alley with Harrison Ford!) It's a shame that he's not still married to Melissa Matheson, the lady who wrote E.T., but I still think he's fun to watch on the screen and a neat guy and he was great that one time I saw him on Conan. I thought he was compelling in K-19.
This week, Amazon.com (I'd provide a link but I forget the web address) sent me email to notify me that the Indiana Jones box set is finally available for pre-order on DVD. While it's irksome to consider the possible consequences of buying the "full series" right before they gear up to shoot another one, I'm still looking forward to it. From the product photo, it appears to be a 4-DVD set, which promises one of two things: lots of special features, or a placeholder box to save room for Indiana Jones 4. I'm not sure which I like better! Considering the fact that we celebrated the tenth anniversary of Jurassic Park's release date this week, I'm super-jazzed that more pearls of Spielbergiana are on their digital way. The box set is due for release in November, so I can put it on my Wish List and then lean really hard on my Mom to buy it for me as a holiday present, like I did with Back To The Future last year. You'd think I'd have learned something from the two grueling months of seeing BTTF on the shelf at Best Buy and wishing I didn't have to wait to unwrap it, but no. (Besides, this year it's only one grueling month! We pass the savings on to you!)
And with the fourth Indy on his schedule already, we're guaranteed at least a minimum bulkhead against the Harrison Ford Career Backslide. I just really hope he can find engaging non-comedic roles to keep himself busy. He's not Jim Carrey, just like Jim Carrey's not Kevin Spacey. If I see Ford in a Grumpy Old Men remake with Tommy Lee Jones in a few years, I think I'll cry.
