Trouble in Blogland
I can write, but should I?
A weblog (or "blog") is like an online journal. There are no real requirements about content or length or style. For the most part, it's almost better to eschew all of those ideas and just write for an audience of one: the blogger himself. The approach at pH7media.com has always been to try to do blogging one better; by extending the form a little and by refining the content to the point where it contains at least a token amount of interest for a broader audience. By and large, the result has been favorable. But there's a reason that blogging, a daily or even hourly pursuit, refrains from such requisites. It's a bitch to keep the output up!
In my mind, Matrix Week was a resounding success for pH7media.com. (A few readers have agreed, which is hugely affirming even if I would have considered it a resounding success anyway.) It did, however, leave me a little stymied as far as what to do next. Certainly not every entry would be as carefully prepared or synergistically themed as those of Matrix Week, but it was a wake-up call of sorts. In striving for a longer-form broadly-appealing style, I've hindered my own ability to post short, staccato bursts of creativity. This in turn has led to the dismissal of otherwise dandy ideas because "I don't have enough to say about that!"
Eek! Realizing the insipid futility of your own output is like blogging kryptonite! Do I relax my standards and start posting blog-like entries? ("Today I watched some TiVo and called to renew a library book.") Do I suffer the inevitable audience drop-off (and whining from key readers) that comes with a reduced output? Do I quit sleeping and just spend every day refining my silly ideas into sleek, five-paragraph rants?
It seems like option three is the least likely to cause trouble. I'll let you know how it goes!
