Terse dialogue, gorgeous vistas, and a hero whose gut tells him to damn the cost and do what’s right (with exactly the conclusion you’d expect). Nothing to shake a stick at, but not much to write home about, either. It holds up a laughably idealistic view of the power of news and truth, and it’s a shame Hanks can’t play a character with a little more edge, a little more “shoot first” gumption, but that’s not to say he wasn’t perfectly good. Elizabeth Marvel turns in a stunning performance—muted, but powerful.
