Its Oscar-winning effects are indeed impressive—especially the throwback character design which looks and acts just like the guy in the rubber suit, with CGI amping up the scale and realism. The melodrama gets a bit thick in some moments, but the performances are very moving and they ground the monster story with personal stakes (similar to Spielberg’s approach in War of the Worlds). Add in thoughtful handling of trauma, survival, found family, and government passivity in the face of tragedy, and the result is a cut above your standard creature feature.
