I don’t always like the roles he picks, but Phoenix is a compelling talent. He’s like a character actor who plays leads, and he brings a commitment and physicality to this role that few could. Zazie Beetz is never not great, and De Niro is impressively game and energetic, in a role he could easily have phoned in. The persistent grime and depression take their toll, but altogether it’s a remarkably satisfying film, and wins you over to Arthur’s perspective—when empathy erodes and apathy takes root, anarchy feels like the only response.
