Vivid and energetic fun, without a surprising story or theme, but clever and infectious all the same—all of which makes Jack Black a natural fit. The over-the-top approach plays to Hess’s strengths, and he’s smart to make things madcap and ridiculous, but play that almost entirely straight. (Otherwise you appeal to kids but bore adults, or vice versa.) Very good here and on Wednesday, Emma Myers will be one to watch.
