I never followed Ebert very closely. I saw “Two Thumbs Up” on the cover of Look Who’s Talking at Blockbuster, and figured I wouldn’t miss much if I didn’t tune in to At the Movies. I was wrong. I missed two guys sharing their passion for movies, and making film and film criticism accessible to a casual viewer without “talking down” to them. This warm and eye-opening profile introduced me to the depth of Ebert’s thinking and writing about film, and his determination to use his platform to improve the culture and the art form. His ego, too, of course—but also his sincere empathy and character.
