It’s a visually spectacular film with excellent performances and a rich sense of place and history. Some of the vampire stuff overstays its welcome, but I hung in there because it served the metaphor well and the story and dialogue were top-notch. It wasn’t made for me, of course, but I found it fascinating and moving, and it sure is great to see an original film having such a breakout success, especially delivering such a resonant message.
