It’s about half an hour longer than it needs to be, and its reputation for being overly schmaltzy is better deserved than its Best Picture win, but it’s easy to get caught up in its scope, and even many parts of the romance story. (Both owe much to James Horner’s award-winning score.) I wish the writing were more sophisticated, I wish we had 30% more Kathy Bates, and I wish Paxton’s part had been recast. He was a fine actor, but he had the wrong angle on this character, and it makes the modern scenes seem pointless, when really they’re pretty essential, just overlong.
