The amount of pressure placed on these young athletes by their families and communities is heartbreaking. As is the all-too-familiar story of a moneyed system manipulating events to maintain its advantage. How exactly could signing bonuses “get out of hand?” I’m no expert, but I’ve never heard of a ballclub hosting a bake sale to sign a free agent; they make a business decision to pay what it costs to get the talent that will make them money in the long run.
