Emma Thompson is tremendously well matched to the part, and although the story veers briefly into some unnecessary dramatics, it explores nuanced ideas about how we see ourselves (emotionally and physically) and how we relate to our desires, including the regrettable pressure we often feel to keep them at arm’s length. The Tall Guy has one of my favorite sex scenes in movie history, and 30 years on, Thompson’s back with another unforgettable and impactful coupling—quite impressive!
