Gordon-Levitt is excellent, and clearly relishing his role, but the rest of the film fails to match his quirky charm with any consistency. The result is not as darkly funny as the Elmore Leonard style it tries to achieve, but just dark—and kind of unnerving because every once in a while it will still try to be funny about it.
