Garner is terrific, balancing vulnerability with strength in a complex and sympathetic character. The concept is creepy and engrossing, aided by the child narrator and a well-engineered overlapping storyline approach. It’s a shame Cregger fell back on a few isolated jump scares, because the material is strong enough to maintain plenty of tension without it.
