Dissecting comedy can be dull and unsatisfying (as Downey himself points out), so it’s a testament to his brilliance and his prolific output that he and so many great comic minds can make a fascinating hour out of it. Otherwise this might have risked sliding into clip-show territory, a fate the producers seem to be hedging against with the use of ill-conceived cutaways to things like popcorn popping or pencils scribbling on notepads.
