On Family Guy, Peter complains that the film “insists upon itself”—which has always stuck with me as an apt way of putting it. Watching it at last, I didn’t encounter anything to discredit that assessment. There are excellent performances from Brando, James Caan, and Diane Keaton—and Robert Duvall, especially. Michael’s arc didn’t make a ton of sense to me, especially the Apollonia interlude. It’s got plenty of clever moments, but I don’t think it earns its reputation, nor does it justify Coppola’s ascent.
