Linklater’s great with characters philosophizing about life, and Hawke really disappears into this part, a flawed and provocative character who’s hard to love but also hard to dismiss. The discussions are interesting, but I question the decision to wedge him in, Forrest Gump style, as a creative muse to a handful of other artists (whom he probably never actually met). Similarly baffling is the effort expended to remind us repeatedly of Hart’s diminutive stature. Qualley is captivating, as is Patrick Kennedy as E.B. White—in some ways I wish we’d spent the whole evening with him instead.
