Between this and Inherent Vice, it seems like a reliable way for directors I dislike to win my heart is to make a quirky ensemble crime drama where a likable antihero is drawn into resolving a volatile situation by happenstance or mistaken identity. If there were a label for such a genre, it would definitely be my favorite—even directors I love (Lebowski) and directors I’ve never heard of (Slevin) get the benefit! Golly, this is grimy, but Butler fits the character well, and the cast is a great mix, populating the intermingled world with a variety of personalities. A nearly-unrecognizable Griffin Dunne is fantastic; he went through a night like this himself once.
