Hardly needs me to defend it, as the top grosser of its year and a staple in many families’ holiday traditions, but I liked it more than I thought I would. Ron Howard makes his share of missteps, but also gets a lot of things right. The casting is perfect, throughout (Taylor Momsen was a lucky find: precocious and adorable, anchoring the story’s emotional arc with aplomb); the messages resonate; the song is catchy and moving; and even the dog is great—an uncanny match for the cartoon. Sure, Carrey’s bouncing off the walls, but it’s what he was hired to do. (And, considering what he went through on this film, it’s amazing he’s even on his feet.) Living alone, I say and do a lot of goofy stuff to amuse myself, too.
