Zenovich’s prior work implied this might be an unflinching portrait, but it’s really hard to understand the purpose here, except to varnish Chevy’s terrible reputation. Every time his awful behavior is mentioned, the film is quick to cut to someone who says he’s warm, or guarded, or people don’t get his humor. The clips just underline how unjustified his opinion of himself really is—if he’d never met John Hughes or Steve Martin, would we even know his name today?
