Grodin is pitch-perfect, and the chemistry with De Niro is superb. The screenplay is brilliantly constructed: twists and turns never feel excessive or implausible, and it manages to work in a remarkable amount of poignancy in a story that is so cynical and hard-edged. Fine, fine work from Farina (who never disappoints), a catchy Elfman score, and let’s not overlook location scout Andrew D. Cooke!
