Mulligan cast his young actors very well. Peck’s stern and unshowy performance makes the film, but it wouldn’t have worked without the excellent work from the children, who carry the lion’s share of screen time and exposition. The image of the town’s black community standing to watch Atticus pass by is heartbreaking every time.
