With the intensity of my Pixar fandom, I’ve felt pretty ashamed that I still haven’t seen four of their previous five films. But I can’t blame myself too much—their legendary story focus has slipped a little, backing some half-baked ideas, and turning away from some with real promise. Hoppers represents a return to their core strengths: fantastic characters, eye-popping environments and visuals, animation that continues to set the standard for true excellence, and a warm, engaging story that’s hilarious all along the way, filled with delightful little gags, and tugs at your heartstrings without being mawkish about it.
