I remain firmly opposed to making a movie of this beautiful, intricate book, but I have to hand it to Lord & Miller, Gosling, and especially Andy Weir’s cinematic guardian angel Drew Goddard, for wisely pursuing less of an adaptation and more of a companion piece. The result is visually breathtaking, deeply heartfelt, and brilliant at every turn. In the end, it was the right call to gloss over the scientific minutiae—if I miss those delicious details, I can always read the book again!—the resulting focus on the personalities and relationships elevates the poignant message of Weir’s work. Rocky-Vision was dumb and unnecessary, but every other directorial choice is ingenious, especially the casting of Sandra Hüller.
