Everything is just stupendous here—script, cinematography, editing, music—all of it. The cast is to die for: Macy and Condon left me begging for more; Jones is fantastic, of course; even Joel Edgerton, who’s always good but has never wowed me, packs a lot of emotion into a subdued performance. My main complaint is usually that he doesn’t do much—for this character, that’s a perfect fit. Will Patton is an inspired choice for the narration. And I’ve never seen a toddler depicted so perfectly in a film performance before. (Not even close.)
