Craig Ferguson - "Istanbul"  How much do I LOVE THAT MAN!! I completely lucked into this by watching the tail end of last week's Galifianakis visit with Dave.

I've gone from not thinking that THE LATE LATE SHOW WITH CRAIG FERGUSON was funny, to thinking that THE LATE LATE SHOW WITH CRAIG FERGUSON must be funny because everyone I know says it's funny, but still not actually getting it myself. So, agree to disagree, I guess. Until I come around, which I certainly might someday.

[I'm not saying that this particular clip isn't worth watching a couple of times, mind you]

Can we at least all agree wholeheartedly that it's inexcusable that, halfway through 2009, the show isn't broadcast in HD?

Holy Jesus, yes. The HD feed does look better than the standard feed from DirecTV, but it's not HD, and it's not widescreen, which is sad.

I wish I knew a magical way to convert you sooner, because the show is wild, seat-of-the-pants fun. It's as though there's no rehearsal (and the sketches normally bear that out, though the choreography in this case indicates hours of hard work). The cold open and the monologue are just like hanging out in Craig's older brother's basement with all his friends, while Craig tries to make all the older kids laugh so they'll let him stick around. He's all over the place, and it's hilarious. (This clip is the cold open, and the awesomeness of that is undercut by CBS adding that Late Late Show logo on the head of the YouTube clip, because the show actually starts with just an empty shot of the set most nights, then Craig and/or the puppets sashay in. Paul Shaffer plays Dave out, Worldwide Pants logo, then a second or two of black, then that. Balls out. That's what makes it so great. The puppets did a rendition of "Chant of the Wanderer" once, and I bought it off iTunes the next day – which I'd have done in this case if I didn't already own three versions of the song.)

And he does this thing whenever he makes a really sloppy double entendre, where he nods and wiggles his eyebrows like, "Yes, I'm naughty," then quickly shakes his head No, with a shy smile, then Yes again, then No. Then... Yes? It sounds dopey, and it is, but like the best of Conan or Dave's run-it-into-the-ground bits, I can't wait for it every time.

Yes, and we can rejoice that, at least three-quarters of the way through 2009, it will be.

Damn. Busy week, and I only remembered to record Monday's Craig. It was worth it, though! With the new HD (and two new lights!) comes a new opening, which is possibly the best TV opening we've seen since Boston Common.

(Due to unforeseen circumstances, I had to watch a Parks & Recreation the other night, and it was a little funnier than I remembered it. Its opening is a strong challenger for the #1 spot, but Craig's has puppets and the Grove fountain, so it's Craig by a nose.)

Anna loved the new Craig Ferguson opening too, so, while I can't quite claim that it's "fun for all ages," I think we're solid on "fun for ages 3 and up."
