Writing My Senator
I never thought I'd end up writing a Representative or a Senator. But the current White House media blitz trying to pass Bush's enormous tax cut for his rich friends and contributors started to worry me that maybe the remaining Senators who are interested in voting down the hugely irresponsible bill might not realize how many of us are behind them.
So, just to be safe, I jotted a quick email and dropped it in the contact box on the website of both California Senators. It doesn't do much good because they'll both vote no anyway, but hopefully they'll tell their moderate Republican friends.
Here, in its entirety, is what I sent to them. Just like the writing on this site, it isn't meant to be researched and impermeable; it's meant to give them an idea how real people are thinking. (Well, at least the real people who are thinking at all.)
I would like to add my voice to those encouraging you to remain strong against the media blitzkrieg from the White House regarding the current tax cut that President Bush is trying to push through the Senate.
The tax cut is too large and will result in further deficit spending in an already shaky economy at home and abroad. Considering the amount the current administration has requisitioned for Operation Iraqi Freedom, the timing couldn't be worse. The tax cut favors the wealthiest Americans, and we know from experience in this area that such benefits will not effectively "trickle down" to the working class families Bush claims he is interested in helping.
I strongly encourage you to vote against the tax cut in its current behemoth form, and to encourage your fellow Senators to vote it down until a more equitable and fiscally responsible stimulus plan can be developed. Economic growth is of dire importance, but such short-term thinking will only create more trouble for our country in the future, a future which is increasingly uncertain as a result of the current world situation.
