I really shouldn’t compare this to Tina Fey’s miniseries adaptation, but I watched them back-to-back, so I’m doing it anyway. Alda’s version has more out-loud laughs, and a more natural chemistry between himself and Burnett. Sandy Dennis’s character gets a lot less screen time; likely a result of underlying 1970s sexism, but possibly also because she’s not a very strong performer. If this version had Colman Domingo (and Len Cariou had even a tenth of Steve Carell’s charisma), it would’ve been unstoppable.
