You have to work damn hard to get me not to root for a Scarlett Johansson character, but this movie really puts its back into it. Any hope that top-shelf actors and a gentle reboot might bring this franchise back on track is very quickly demolished. The characters are preposterous, unlikable, and completely inconsistent from one sequence to the next; the set pieces are barely connected by logic or timeframe; and the MacGuffin is laughably stupid. David Koepp is the last person you’d expect to misunderstand the appeal of the original so badly, and it’s unfathomable that he wrote the lean, incisive Black Bag in the same year as this slapdash and tonally mismatched turd. (The vistas are superb, though. Edwards fumbled this horribly, but he still knows how to get the most out of an exotic location shoot.)
