Dragged down at times by an overemphasis on setting up sassy southern ladies with endless wisecracking bons mots, overly dramatic in moments, but very strong in its depiction of friendships that last a lifetime, for better or worse. Plus a jaw-dropping Sally Field scene that should’ve gotten much more attention. posted 11.30.18

It’s a real shame Dolly didn’t get a chance to work with worthy material more often; she works wonders with this character. Julia’s excellent, as well—deserved the hell out of that Oscar nomination—but it’s an absolutely masterful performance from Sally Field that elevates this to greatness.
