Ha ha!! Shrek 2 actually got votes. Someone out there has some brass balls.

Bee BoyFri, 2/18/05 4:01am

Hee! I almost voted for Shrek 2 myself, รก la Chris Klein in Election – just to show I'm a mensch. (Plus, spotting them a point feels sort of like the check-raise – my favorite poker move.)

But then I thought better of it. I was menschy enough to put them up against each other in the same bracket, when I could've easily paired The Incredibles with competition less likely to draw a vote. Let that hideous green ogre stew in his own juices! (And woe be the person who voted for him if I ever discover that person's true identity... unless it was just Holly baiting me; she's entitled.)

I am SO entitled. But it wasn't me. I haven't seen Shrek or Shrek 2, so I'm abstaining...

But I did finally see Sideways yesterday – better late than never – it finally came to Longmont. So that's something.

Hey! I just remembered I'm "registered" now. No more scare quotes around my name.

My new TV is about to arrive. My glorious new Sony. To think I've just spent about six months watching a 13-inch screen. Well, no more.

I nearly decided to shell out six months' salary, actually, and thereby come into possession of a massive, massive flatscreen projection TV to hang on the wall, but then I decided that eating food, having a roof over my head, and so forth for half a year might be just slightly better than having a $7000 television while being homeless and starving. The screen might get rained on, and that would be bad.

So I stuck with my original plan.

I should boldly come forward, risking the throwing of tomatoes and other rotten fruit, and reveal my identity: I voted for Shrek 2 over (WAY over) The Incredibles.

I liked the Incredibles; I shifted in my seat a little but watched the whole thing and laughed. I enjoyed.

Shrek 2 on the other hand, I saw 4 times in the theaters and couldn't get enough of it. I disliked the first Shrek immensely and only saw 2 due to happy accident, but it was hilarious and endearing and gorgeous. I stand by my vote.

Look out...here come the tomatoes!!!

ACMon, 2/21/05 3:17pm

I think you're in for more than tomatoes!!

HollyMon, 2/21/05 11:50pm

Tomatoes are yummy.

As I posted in a comment somewhere on this site, Incredibles made me uncomfortable while I was watching it.

The clincher was walking out of the theater afterwards with the person I saw the film with, who is clinically anorexic. She said, "That daughter was the ultimate anorexic superhero. Not only was she already impossibly thin, but she was able to disappear altogether and throw up shields so no one could touch her ... I have dreamed I could get so thin that I could disappear completely out of the world. That's totally a classic anorexic dream. Anorexics everywhere want to be that girl."

We don't need movies that reinforce dreams like that.

I haven't seen Shrek 2 and I've been criticizing it for all the flaws of the first Shrek (and for the first five minutes of the sequel, and its trailer, which I viewed online). Maybe the rest of Shrek 2 doesn't make the same mistakes that I've been assuming it makes – but, with "Far, Far Away Idol" on the DVD extras, I'm willing to bet that it does.

In any case, no tomatoes for you. I could defend lobbing some tomatoes if you had said you hated The Incredibles, but I haven't seen Shrek 2 so it would be unjustified to attack your opinion of it without any experience to back that up.

(Eeeck! Jeebus! When did I start thinking like an adult??)

I exclaimed in surprise when I read that you haven't seen Million Dollar Baby or Shrek 2, because from your site I assumed somehow that you had.

Seriously, see Shrek 2. I swear I dragged a few people to the theater to see it who also (rightfully) thought Shrek1 sucked and they were all (rightfully) converted. Million Dollar Baby is a movie where if I had been told what it was about before I went I wouldn't have gone, but it really is worth seeing, just even in case there's a 2% chance you'll be taken with it, it's that good.

Shrek2 just had all those tiny details that made me laugh hysterically and get misty eyed at the same time...really, shrek1 sucked but shrek2 is worth seeing.

Joe MulderTue, 2/22/05 11:27am

I have to say, I didn't like Shrek, but I really didn't like Shrek 2. If Alicia did it might be worth it to see it and decide for yourself, but, I thought it was almost exactly as enjoyable as the first (i.e., not very), only we'd already seen it.

I can't really comment about The Incredibles, except to say that if the daughter had been fat, then you'd have people saying the film implies that fat girls want to disappear. How come you never hear any of these complaints about Olive Oyl, by the way?

[sorry; I shouldn't joke about anorexia. I can imagine it would be very difficult to watch The Incredibles of you were anorexic, but, I imagine that it wasn't intended to be that way. Obviously I don't know for sure, but, that's what I imagine]

Also, it should be noted that I'm currently working on a biologically engineered Supertomato that weighs as much as a car and can actually eat people... this I will use on those who liked The Aviator.

Bee BoyTue, 2/22/05 11:32am

I'm currently working on a biologically engineered Supertomato

God bless you for that! (But you may want to check with George Clooney – I think he has some experience in this area.)
